Recommendations... please :)

A friend of mine showed me this quote years ago and it went something like this: Read the best books first.

On that note, I would like to hear any and all book, film and music recommendations that you can offer me. Please. :-)

Does anyone out there like Karen Kingsbury?
Does anyone like mysteries?

“When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.” -- Mark Twain
Does any like to read Cynthia Voigt? She wrote one of my favorite books entitled, “Jackaroo”.
What about Brock and Bodie Thoene?

And what about films? Period? Historical? Modern?
Some of my favorites are: Pride and Prejudice (1995; Jennifer Ehle), Pirates of the Carribean (Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom), The Cinderella Story (Hillary Duff), Amazing Grace (Ioan Gruffudd, Romola Garai, Benedict Cumberbatch), Fiddler on the Roof (Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey) and Miss Potter (Renee Zellweger, Ewan MacGregor).

Oh Naomi! If you haven't read any of Jane Austen's books you should! They're absolutely addictive, yet so well written. Great for mental stimulation.

Also, "Jane Eyre" is a lovely, sad, mysterious story. And beautifully written.

Hi Naomi! Have you tried the H. Rider Haggard books? My favorites are "Pearl Maiden", "Lysbth," and "The Brethren." BUT - a book I think every woman should read is "The Fruit of Her Hands" by Nancy Wilson. :) Happy reading!

Yes, I do like Karen Kingsbury! :)
As far as books go; you must read some George MacDonald's! I think you've read some C.S. Lewis? I'm not always thrilled with all his books but I did enjoy some of them.
Have you ever read any medical fiction? I recently finished 2 books in that genre: False Positive and Lethal Harvest by William Cutrer M.D. & Sandra Glahn. They were fairly good.

I love Michael Phillips too... he has a lot of good books.

As far as movies go, it seems there are never enough good, family ones. I like Ever After, AOGG, Snowy River saga, various classics, A Man Called Peter, and lots of animated movies like Incredibles, Bolt, Wall-E.

Oh, Cheaper by the Dozen and Belles on their Toes is cute.

Have you seen Patriot? It's not for little kids but a good story (it's a war movie).

Dreamer is good too; def. a family movie.

Alrighty then!!! But how am I suppose to remember what I already told you was good?!?! :D:D lol Well I'll just try to recommend ones I recently read/saw, okay?

~Books~

Jane Austen is one of my favorites now, especially "Pride and Prejudice"!

I am reading Tiffany Schlichter's books right now (editor of Virtious Daughters-great mag), "Noble Girlhood" and "All Glorious Within". They are more "spiritual books", but I like them!

I just read "Open Hearts" by Jane Seymour which I enjoyed. It's a colllection of quotes, poems, and short articles. There are a few things I don't agree with, but some very good thoughts! I think it would be encouraging to you. I was able to get it through the library.

Any of Helen Steiner Rice's poetry is VERY encouraging and uplifting. Practical and great!!! Her books are cheap too! :):)

~Movies~

I just got to see "Return to Cranford" and loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you haven't seen "Cranford" or "Return to Cranford", WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is very heartwarming!! Humor, gossipy single ladies, England, romance, sadness, wealth...another Jane Austen sort of. I know you would love it. Based on Elisabeth Gaskall's works, which I have yet to read.

"North and South" is another movie based on Elisabeth Gaskall's book, but I liked it (except for one dress and another scene). I liked the message. Mom saw it and her only two objectives were also the dress and the one scene. :)

I recently saw "The Black Stallion" but I think I would have to watch it again to know what I really thought. Some things were good, some weren't. I think they were trying to get the message across of not giving up.

All I can think of for now! :)

Wow! Thanks so much for all of the replies. I am copying and pasting it all down! Hehe. I haven't heard/read a lot of what you all wrote about so my lists are full up with stuff to try. :) :) :)

Jess, I've read several Jane Austen books and I agree that they are delightful. :) The humor is slipped in at the most delightful and effective places... and the stories are always wonderful. :)

I have read some Karen Kingsbury. My favorite being the series about the first born son, given up for adoption as a baby.. and was a super movie star. God really used that series in my life.
