Cough... and List From the 50's.

I have a cough. It seems to be getting a little better today but it's still bothersome. Please pray that we'll get it figured out and I'll stay healthy for the rest of the winter. But mostly pray that I'll be able to be thankful and rest in God's will. It's hard not to worry sometimes.
Also could you pray that I'll be able to sleep at night. I end up coughing a lot and I can't seem to get comfortable. Thank you!! :-)

I found a list of things a guy supposedly likes in a girl in a book, published in 1958. Some of it made me laugh but it mostly made me think about how conservative life was fifty years ago. Have guys changed so much or is it the girls? Or, is it society in general? Some of it still fits this modern age (for instance, a boy likes a girl who listens) but others do not (for instance, a boy likes a girl who doesn't care for smokes or drinks).
Actually the funniest thing about this is that most of it completely fits the lifestyle I was raised with and am still trying to live. Some of the issues, I struggle with. For instance, I don't have a bell in my voice. Hehe. :-) More seriously though, gossip. That is a hard one.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this list and to all who read, please feel free to post your comments, regardless of your view on what a true lady is. :-) :-) I welcome something to think about.

A boy likes a girl who...
listens...
meets his eye...
walk with a spring, not a swagger...
has a bell in her voice...
make inexpensive clothes look cheery...
isn't self-conscious about her figure, but doesn't advertise it...

A boy likes a girl who...
wears a flower, but not the whole Botanical Garden...
is prudent but not prudish...
doesn't care for smokes or drinks...
is a lady, even in jeans...
appreciates football without looking as if she could play it...

A boy likes a girl who...
laughs but not too loudly...
doesn't knock the rock, but admits there's room for Bach...
would rather bite her tongue than her nails...
has opinions, but doesn't think they're the only ones...
doesn't call him on the phone for no good reason...

A boy likes a girl who...
like him more than she likes his car...
thanks the donor for small favors...
neither spreads nor inspires gossip...
doesn't go to the beach dressed in a pocket hankie...
acts herself, instead of aping movie stars...

A boy likes a girl who...
has read a book...
walks in the rain, and doesn't fuss about her hair coming down...
gets up early to go fishing...
appreciates his jokes...
cares about his hobbies...

Hmm, mind sharing the name of the book?
I loved the list and it surprisingly is very fitting for me today too, I mean it sounds like things that should still be appreciated and promoted and things I want to cultivate in my life.

"doesn't go to the beach dressed in a pocket hankie"...big exclamation point on this one!

"On Becoming A Woman"... and I can't remember who the author was. :) It was quite interesting, all the way through, actually. :)

Oh yes! Some of the lines made me chuckle, as did the one you mentioned. :) :) That's so prevalent in today's culture... and it's even worse outside of the US!

Naomi,

We met you & your folks once @ the Walls' ... remember? I've been following your blog since early summer when Gloria mentioned it.

We've since moved also - from SK to MB. Spruce Woods area, living a life much like yours -- except the sawmill is our sons' dream machine and they do not yet have it, lol!

We really appreciate your thoughts on "Honesty". The list you posted today is also worth mentioning.

As parents of six young men, we also appreciate the encouragement towards modest dress.

As for the cough? I just put up a post on our blog about curbing a cough using "Oil of Oregano" ... if you have that on hand do give it a try - or get it on hand for next time. It really works!!

Please extend our greetings to your folks from us? Thank you.

Abundant Blessings,
Mrs. Darlene (Ken) Klassen http://livenlearnfarm.blogspot.com/

I loved this!! Made me laugh at times, but so much truth!!! I think I have read the book a long time ago! We may even have it!! Either way, thank you for giving our consciences something different to think about!! :)

Oh dear! We have a cough too. The oregano oil suggestion is a good one. We've been using that. But it hasn't helped me as much as it has helped the children.

I love the list. This is even good for us married women. It is good to remember what our husbands like. Thanks! Mrs. P~

I love this list, Naomi! Would you mind if I copy it to my blog? I love how it encourages women to be modest and feminine, yet still acknowledges the beauty of an intelligent, modern, sophisticated woman. Thanks for sharing.

Mrs. Klassen, I was delighted to get your note! Thank you so much for taking the time to write. :-) We do remember you... thanks to a picture I took of you there (you might remember that Bekah and I were going a little camera crazy together ;-)). Due to certain circumstances I'm afraid I wasn't at my best when we met... Everything from that day is very blurry for me! Lol!

How are you liking your new home? When did you move? We had considered moving to MB this past year but we found nothing that suited our needs there. So we ended up in Endeavour. I can't say I regret it. I love the neighborhood. Our pastor and his family are our nearest neighbors and they are wonderful people. :-)
I hope that your sons get their dream machine and, if you all would like to come see my Dad's ;-), please feel free to contact me at naomi.holter@gmail.com. I will give you our phone # so you can get directions. We love company!!! :-D

My cough is getting much better... I found our stash of oregano oil shortly before I posted this post and have been pretty diligent about taking it. It's wonderful stuff, isn't it? But I am thinking that the major reason I have improved so quickly is because of the prayers of my friends. I'll have to check out your blog. :-)

Smiles,
Naomi

Sam, thanks so much for the prayers. I can feel them. ::hugs::

Bekah, so glad you enjoyed the list. There's nothing like pieces of wisdom that make you laugh and think seriously at the same time. That's called talent. ;-) I think the author of the book was one very wise lady. Blessings on your day... smiles. :-)

Mrs. P.-- thanks for the comment. Have you tried vitamin D3? It works wonders. Takes 15 for three days, then ten the 4th. I would be taking it, but we ran out. :-P :-) Hope you all get better soon! Glad you liked the list. It is thought provoking. :-)

Melanie, of course you may copy it! Thanks for wanting to. :-)
