March 31st -- lion or lamb

Astonishingly, I actually found a lamb to take a picture of. Actually, lambs, plural. They are as delicious as they are adorable.

Thank you to all of you who offered advice and great ideas for today's photo... and photos of the days past! You have helped make this month fun as well as challenging.

I am sorry to see this month come to an end. Perhaps I will continue taking a picture a day; we shall see. :)

March 30th -- your desk/workspace

Upstairs in our house resides my workspace/office/studio.
I love my job.

Day 29 -- lunchtime

My appetite is still in the dumps after being sick... I'm simply not hungry. But this isn't a bad thing. Before I got sick, I was trying to lose weight and it's hard to do because I love food. (To clarify, the wrong kinds of food. ;-)) So this appetite disappearance is actually a blessing in disguise.

Lunchtime today consisted of eggs and a glass of cranberry juice. Scrambled eggs are the bane of my existence except when they're smothered in ketchup and mayo... it is then that they become a dish worthy of reckoning. :-)

Before I made lunch, I made chicken soup and cleaned up the house. It feels so good to have everything accomplished. A clean house to welcome my students! Chicken soup to welcome home my husband. :-)

I like chopping up veggies and meat and throwing in a ton of herbs and pepper and smelling the simmer all over the house...

Day 28 -- animal

Today was challenging. I went outside and took several pictures. It was definitely a bear day.

We live in White Bear, so all the signs have white bears on them. :-)
In my mind, this picture is the adult side of me.
And since I simply must be taken seriously, this picture won.
Hehe.

Whereas this one...

... is most definitely my child side.
I love it. Isn't he cute?
Bears are ferocious creatures, even when they're running away from you. They frighten me. But this bear is too cute to be scared of.

You wanna know who I consider to be The Scariest Bear Of All?

Lotso-Huggin-Bear (aka "Lotso") from Toy Story Three.
The evil teddy bear and baby doll combo makes me shiver every time I think of it.

I also took a picture of a moose.

Yes, Mr. Moose. It is indeed (::peers closely at the dial::) a little past 0* C. :-)

March 27th -- star

Through the years, the world has given much thought to the meaning of the stars. They have symbolized good and bad; the fall and rise of kings; the gods and goddesses of old.
But I have my own thoughts.

One of the reasons I love Christmas so much is because of the stars
When I took the other decorations down, I left this one hanging up because I believe that stars symbolize
welcome, warmth and hope.
Which is what I strive to give to others, as Jesus did.

I love the stars.
They shine bright for a time and leave a moment of a memory when they fall.

March 26th -- bag or purse

This is my favorite bag.

At one point, the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party was my favorite place to be. It still ranks pretty high on my list (at home with Jesse is now at the top). Add that to the fact that Michele Amy is like a mother to me... and oh yeah! This is definitely my favorite bag. It comes with me everywhere because (1: it's handy. (2: it brings back good memories.

March 25th -- what's on your feet

My favorite socks!

I am ridiculously picky about my socks. When I was a little girl, I gave my Grandma Holter a very hard time about putting my shoes on because my socks weren't exactly lined up against my toes. I forced her to put my shoes on three times before I deemed it was acceptable. Looking back, I wonder how a three year old child held such power. Haha!!

However, all joking aside: if my socks don't fit right, my feet hurt. Weird, eh?

March 24th -- colorful

Snow received this unique (i.e. slightly disturbing) stuffed toy last Christmas. While *he* isn't quite sure what to think of it, I find it quite adorable. ;)

March 23rd -- something sweet

Due to the fact that I seem to have caught the local cold, my brain has gone all wobbly-ill. I really had no idea what to take a picture of today because of that. But as I lay on our bed in a most groggy state, I suddenly had a brilliant thought for today's picture:

scatter lots of candy all over the kitchen table and take a picture of it. :)

Impressively, I didn't even want to taste it... :)
My favorite part of this picture? When I was spilling M&Ms all over the table and the floor and Jesse's eyes got huge. :) :) :)

March 22nd -- neighborhood

Actually, where we live, it's spelled with a 'u', like so: "neighbourhood". Just saying. :)

In the winning picture, you see our neighbours' cabins and part of our driveway. You can just barely see our house. It's the brown one... almost in the middle of the picture.

To be honest, I was worried about the picture today. Our neighbourhood is beautiful, rugged and unique. There are so many things I love about where we live. How was I ever supposed to group them together in a single shot?

As it turns out, we spent over half an hour and 46 pictures looking for it. The lake is slowly melting in the warmth and the wind is drying up the mud. Jesse is feeling better and the cat isn't complaining as much about being outside. :)

All in all, it made for a beautiful walk. I have such contentment right now!

The bright sunlight, rippled clouds and distant sound of the drums of the powwow have set the mood of the idyllic [belated] ides of March.

March 21st -- living room

We are so in love with our house but the living room is where we hang out the most: inlaid with cedar, skylight, room for lots of movies and tv shows, lots of light...

...and, most importantly, so comfortable.

Cinnamon Twists

My sisters and I made these a lot a few years ago... but we got out of the habit. So, when I suddenly thought of them the other day, they almost seemed legendary: all I could remember was that they were wonderful and the dough had a special ingredient. Since my husband loves cinnamon, I decided to call my mom up and see if she could remember the recipe. At first, she didn't but as we prodded old memories to life, she found the recipe in our 1950 Betty Crocker Cookbook. I love that cookbook!

Today, I made them and I discovered that I simply must share the recipe with you. It is so easy and the result of your labor is really, really good. :-)

Cinnamon Twists

1 C. Sour Cream

Heat in saucepan until lukewarm. Take off heat and add:

 3 TBSP sugar
1/8 tsp . soda
1 tsp. salt
2 ½ tsp yeast
1 large egg
2 tbsp shortening (butter)
3 cups flour (add one cup at a time)

Mix until you have a smooth dough. (I mix by hand, then put dough out on counter and knead until smooth.) Lightly flour counter and roll into a 12" x 24" rectangle.

Mix together:

1/3 C. Brown Sugar
1 tsp. Cinnamon

Spread dough with butter, then sprinkle sugar mixture over half of dough. Then, fold dough over itself. Cut into 24 strips. Twist each strip a couple of times and place on greased cookie sheet, pressing ends down (so the twists don't untwist...). Allow twists to rise for an hour in a warm place.

Bake at 375* for 12 - 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Glaze when cool.

Glaze:
2 TBSP boiling milk
1 tsp soft butter/shortening
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1-2 C. icing sugar

Mix until smooth and drizzle over twists.

March 20th -- flower

When I was younger, I collected china in all forms... unfortunately, as I grow older, my priorities have changed and I have stopped collecting for the most part.

However, on my 25th birthday, Michele gave me a beautiful cake stand (late 1800's) to add to my collection. I consider it among the most beautiful items I own.

Each day, I look at it and revel in the beauty of friendship... and exquisite china

March 19th -- office supply

At work, we have this huge lovely stack of Bristol Board. People come in and buy it all the time for art and science projects. It's bulky and awkward to deal with but I do believe this giant paper stack has become one of my favorite things about Pharmasave.

Perhaps this is because I have a fond memory of the mushrooms our friend Connie made for our Mad Tea Party out of this stuff!

March 18th -- book

My entire life I have felt an attraction to film, books, paintings, sculpture, etc., etc. Basically, anything artistic.

This particular book I think I remember buying at a garage sale for a dollar. Inside is a wealth of pictures and commentary on the evolution of Westerns; from their very beginnings to the 1960's. I figuratively drooled over it for hours, wondering at the world's fascination with dolled up, good for nothing cowboys and lame stories. But I couldn't judge too harshly: I was enthralled as well. Who can beat Gene Autry, George "Gabby" Hayes or Smiley Burnette?

As I grow older and experience life, I still find joy in art and a great happiness is finding a well told story.

To finish this description, I consider myself blessed to be married to Jesse who shares my love of creativity and art. :)

Here are some images taken from the book.

March 17th -- something green

Happy St. Paddy's Day! :-)

Here I am with some of the Pharmasave chicks. :-)

March 16th -- YOU

I took a dozen or so shots this morning... I'm in a rush 'cuz I have to work at Pharmasave today... so none of them turned out they way I had envisioned. But here is the best one.

You're looking at me in a mirror. :-)

Ya'll have a good day, ya hear?!

(Oh no. I'm starting to sound like Mitt Romney! Cheesy grits, anyone??)

March 15th -- wood

Last night, I kept waking up thinking about what picture I was going to take today. There is so much "wood" in and around our home that I didn't know what to choose from. Then, at around 2 am, I had an idea that satisfied me: down the hill in back of our house, there is an outhouse. I couldn't remember if all the paint had fallen off or if it had ever even had paint but I decided to take a peek.

So this morning, I grabbed my camera, slipped on my rubber boots and slogged through the mud, down the hill and...
And, guess what? It is indeed weathered wood.

Do you remember last fall, right after the wedding, we built an addition onto our house? Well, in order to complete the addition, we had to disconnect the plumbing. That meant that we had to use this little sweetheart quite regularly.
In the dark.

(Not always in the dark, of course... but those are the memories that stay close to me.)
:shiver:

March 14th -- something in your front yard

We don't have much of a front yard. Truth be told, we don't have a front yard.

But we have a trail... and some trees... rocks... and a house residing in the vicinity of the front yard.

I love our house!

This is simply for art's sake. The dirt, rocks, moss, sticks and trees... beauty. :-)

March 13th -- Favorite Accessory

My favorite accessory is definitely my ring... however, as you know, I have already used my ring on day 10. :) My next-favorite-accessory is my purse. I bought it back in '06 or '07 and have carried it with me ever since.

There was (is?) this store in Melville that sold antiques, giftware and secondhand purses, etc. This little dear was hanging among their selections. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had found the purse I was looking for. The lady at the counter said she thought it had been made in Czechoslovakia. I have no idea whether that is accurate or not but I haven't seen another purse like it.

$12 and 6 years later, it is still my favorite purse. :-)

The sad news is that I have noticed signs of wear around edges and colorful threads keep slipping out... eventually, I know I'm going to have to get a new one. There is a problem though. I haven't seen another purse that fit me and my personality quite so well.

Elisabeth S., you asked for a picture of the quilt. I'm posting this both on my blog and on FB because I know you're a busy lady and might not see it on one or the other. :-) :hugs:

March 12th -- Store

There are over 400 Pharmasave Stores across Canada. I am privileged to work in Carlyle's local Pharmasave store with coworkers I consider to be honorary sisters and employers I admire and respect.

Bravo Pharmasave! Bravo Carlyle! Bravo Saskatchewan! Bravo Canada!

March 11th -- Clock

This clock was a wedding gift. It stands sentinel over our living room, watching the passerby, my music lessons,  the cat and Jesse and me snuggling on the couch. We love our clock.

Somewhat back from the village street
Stands the old-fashioned country-seat.
Across its antique portico
Tall poplar-trees their shadows throw;
And from its station in the hall
An ancient timepiece says to all, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

Half-way up the stairs it stands,
And points and beckons with its hands
From its case of massive oak,
Like a monk, who, under his cloak,
Crosses himself, and sighs, alas!
With sorrowful voice to all who pass, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

By day its voice is low and light;
But in the silent dead of night,
Distinct as a passing footstep's fall,
It echoes along the vacant hall,
Along the ceiling, along the floor,
And seems to say, at each chamber-door, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

Through days of sorrow and of mirth,
Through days of death and days of birth,
Through every swift vicissitude
Of changeful time, unchanged it has stood,
And as if, like God, it all things saw,
It calmly repeats those words of awe, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

In that mansion used to be
Free-hearted Hospitality;
His great fires up the chimney roared;
The stranger feasted at his board;
But, like the skeleton at the feast,
That warning timepiece never ceased, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

There groups of merry children played,
There youths and maidens dreaming strayed;
O precious hours! O golden prime,
And affluence of love and time!
Even as a miser counts his gold,
Those hours the ancient timepiece told, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

From that chamber, clothed in white,
The bride came forth on her wedding night;
There, in that silent room below,
The dead lay in his shroud of snow;
And in the hush that followed the prayer,
Was heard the old clock on the stair, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

All are scattered now and fled,
Some are married, some are dead;
And when I ask, with throbs of pain,
"Ah! when shall they all meet again?"
As in the days long since gone by,
The ancient timepiece makes reply, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

Never here, forever there,
Where all parting, pain, and care,
And death, and time shall disappear, —
Forever there, but never here!
The horologe of Eternity
Sayeth this incessantly, —
      "Forever — never!
      Never — forever!"

March 10th -- Something That Sparkles

I must admit to feeling a little disgruntled about this picture. There is a slough on the side of our house and when the sun shines on it, it's gorgeous. But by the time I got home from work this evening, the sun was already sinking beneath the hills and the slough looked as despondent as the one depicted in Pilgrim's Progress.

After looking around the house, I realized the only thing that really sparkled were our stainless pots and pans we received as a wedding gift from the Weatherl side of family... and my ring. The ring won. :-)

Jesse and I both love our ring. He gave it to me on January 31st, 2011, after he proposed to me and I was like, "Yes! Yes!" It still makes me excited thinking about it!

For those wondering: Champagne diamond and reclaimed silver.

Today, Jesse and I have been married for 6 months. I love every minute we spend in each other's presence. He is everything I prayed for.

Even though this picture is not what I wanted for today, I must say, it is very fitting. Oh such reasons for celebration!

March 9th -- Music

My Grandma doesn't play the piano. My Mom doesn't play the piano. You may wonder where the music genes in all of us Holter siblings come from. Lol. Because some of us don't just play music; it is a passion that fills us.

However, those genes may have simply skipped a couple generations. My Great-Grandma Dorothy Margaret Chenoweth Vandermolen played the organ. I remember visiting their house and seeing the organ sitting in their living room. I always wished I could have heard her play. Grandma Pat had told me stories about it.

After Grandma Van passed away, her sheet music was given to family. Her daughter, my Grandma Pat, has many of her books and sheet music and, in turn, she gave some of them to me.

When I began to play the piano, this piece of music became my goal to play. Because of that, it became one of the first pieces I played with both hands. :-) And after playing it many times, I still think it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

I sometimes wonder if Grandma Van found the treasure in it as well.

Music runs in my blood.

March 8th -- Dream

It literally took me all day to figure out what I should take a picture of for today's challenge photo. Dream. I had so many ideas. One idea was drawing a picture of a dream I've had and taking a picture of it. Lol. But that seemed unnecessarily complicated.

As with many of you, I have many dreams. They range from spending 70+ years with my wonderful Jesse, to being a mother, to getting my GED, to writing a book (or two... three... four), helping my husband fulfilling his dream as a screen writer, being the best employee I can be every single day I work at Pharmasave, being a the best friend I can be, never getting angry over needless things, being wise, finding more about God.... the list goes on and on.

Some of my dreams are unrealistic, others are very realistic: we might be able to accomplish them sooner than later. But as I thought of these things, I realized that my dreams all add up to one thing:

 Always becoming MORE
always learning and growing;
never ceasing in my search for God and Truth.

It's true that I have seen glimpses of God. But He is never ending, ever faithful and always loving. I long to know Him more.

Always more.

March 7th -- Fruit

For part of our wedding present from my parents, my Mom and sisters made us some home canned fruit and veggies. They hauled it down to the wedding in the cupboard that my dad made as the other part of the wedding gift. We love digging through it all and finding goodies. :-)

At Christmas, someone gave us a jar of pomegranate jelly. We haven't eaten it yet; I guess I'm waiting for the perfect occasion.

March 6th -- Chores

I had some great pictures. Then my SD memory card decided it couldn't work. Well, it wants to be reformatted but it refuses to be reformatted. So I had to grab my other card and take more pictures. Thank goodness I hadn't gotten around to finishing my laundry or dusting. Lol!!

Chores. Washing, drying and folding laundry. Definitely a chore. :-)
But it is so much more enjoyable now that our washing and drier machines have been installed.

And while I was wandering around the house looking for something to take pictures of:

Vast empires of silken cobweb....
Some people might be ashamed of this very apparent lack of dusting and I am no different. ;-)
But cobwebs seem kin to faeries and gnomes so I love them.

March 5th -- Something You Love

Something I love? Us.
Jesse and Naomi Twietmeyer.
Mr. and Mrs.
The talking.
The laughter.
Etc., etc., etc. ;-)
Everything about us.

March 4th -- Tree

Today we were invited for supper over at Jesse's Dad and Mum's place. When we arrived at their place, we went outside and searched for a picture waiting to be taken. We found two, although the first one is definitely our favorite.

I love trees. But I especially love Birch. They remind of freshly fallen snow, white doves, purity...
The Birch have been dying off in this area because of increased dryness in climate. Here's hoping for better, wetter days!
